Steyer’s Background

Tom Steyer is currently the wealthiest Democratic candidate in the race, with a reported net worth of $1.6 billion, according to Forbes. As part of his philanthropic work, Steyer and his wife signed the Giving Pledge “to commit more than half of their wealth to philanthropy or charitable causes.”

In 2013, Steyer founded NextGen America — an advocacy organization that “mobilizes young people to vote in crucial elections.” With a presence on over 400 college campuses, Steyer claims the organization more than doubled youth turnout in 2018 for the key areas it was active.

NextGen also operates a super PAC — the NextGen Climate Action Committee. Focusing on environmental issues, the group raised over $61 million in contributions during the 2018 election cycle.

In 2017, Steyer also founded Need to Impeach, which describes itself as the “movement to impeach the most corrupt president in history.”

The Democratic National Convention (DNC) announced last week that Steyer qualified for the Oct. 15 debate, exceeding the requirements for both his number of unique donors and rank within national polls.
