Flames, Lady Flames Tip Off Season on Dec. 12

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Lee men’s and women’s basketball teams will begin the 2020-21 season on Dec. 12 after the Gulf South Conference Board of Directors approved a 20-game conference schedule on Monday.
The Lady Flames are scheduled to open at home against West Florida on Dec. 12 while the men will travel to Pensacola to face the Argonauts. Times are still to be determined.
For the 2020-21 academic year, the GSC will utilize divisional play in basketball. The schedule will feature a combination of single game matchups and two-game series against the same opponents on consecutive days at the same location. The format is intended to streamline testing protocols and reduce travel costs. Additionally, the conference will implement a mirrored schedule, with the men and women playing at opposite sites, eliminating all doubleheaders.
“This year’s schedule will be unlike anything we have ever done, but I am excited about the possibility of playing and having a meaningful season,” said Lee Athletic Director, Larry Carpenter. “I appreciate the work of our commissioner Matt Wilson and the cooperation of the coaches, AD’s and presidents to get this done.”
With no change to the schedule for NCAA Regionals, the GSC Basketball Championships will keep their dates, with the quarterfinals set to begin on March 2, 2021. More information on those tournaments will be released closer to that time.
”We’re grateful for the opportunity to compete again. Obviously, the schedule has a different look, but it is still just as exciting,” said Lee women’s basketball coach Marty Rowe. “Very few conferences are getting to play a complete schedule, so hats off to our commissioner and league administrators for all the hard work that has went into making our season a reality.”

Updates for Soccer, and Volleyball
Since the cancellation of the 2020 NCAA Fall Championships and the subsequent decision by the league’s Board of Directors to delay any competition in football, soccer and volleyball until at least Jan. 1, conference administrators and coaches have worked diligently to evaluate any potential options for meaningful competition in the spring.
Men’s soccer, women’s soccer, and volleyball will each have a “Spring Championship Series” utilizing a format that features group play, based on geography, followed by a series-ending bracketed event. More details will be released in the coming weeks
