Lee Theatre is returning this semester with a virtual production of “When She Had Wings.” Claimed by the cast and crew as a “family safe and dose of fun” play, the faces behind the production aim to immerse viewers in the production’s world and provide a break from reality.

The play follows B, a 9-year-old who knows she can fly but does not remember how. After a thunderstorm hits, the plot focuses on B’s interactions with different characters in the production.

Sophomore theatre education major Kevin Collins acts as the Dad, Attendant and Man. Collins has participated in theatre since the seventh grade and said he is excited to perform his first show at Lee.

“My favorite part has been working alongside other actors and developing my character for myself,” said Collins. “My role specifically highlights the acting of ‘A’ and ‘B’ throughout the play. Learning how to support them has been my favorite.”

Senior theatre education major Abby Newman plays the role of B, an optimistic and vicarious young girl anticipating learning how to fly. Newman is eager to share a new perspective on theatre with viewers.

“I learned a whole lot through this show,” said Newman. “It’s taught me more about the joy we all get doing theatre. We are overcoming a pandemic to do this show. We have had our bumps in the road, but it has taught me a lot about community.”

Junior theatre major Ellie Jones plays the role of ‘A.’ A mystery revolves around A and her identity, leaving the audience to decide who she is for themselves. “When She Had Wings” is Jones’ first production at Lee on the cast.

“It’s fun. It’s a good time. It’s a nice dose of something special during a time that I feel like we all could use a lifting of our spirits,” Jones said.

Instead of a traditional in-theatre experience, the play will be streamed to the audience for each live performance.

“When She Had Wings” will be performed on Oct. 9, 10, 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets to access the livestream link and code can be purchased from the box office online for the public or by emailing theatre@leeuniversity.edu for student tickets.
