Three things for October 29

1. Facebook company announces name change

Facebook Inc. recently announced their rebranding into Meta Platforms Inc., or “Meta.”

Company CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Thursday this name change reflects the company’s commitment to developing the new surround-yourself technology known as the “metaverse.” The social network itself, however, will still be called Facebook.

The brand’s upgrade will bring new 3D spaces, virtual reality, smart glasses and more.

Skeptics immediately accused the company of trying to change the subject from the Facebook Papers, the trove of leaked documents that have plunged it into the biggest crisis since it was founded, reports AP News.

2. Cleveland to host 34th annual Halloween block party

The 34th annual Cleveland, Tennessee Halloween block party will take place this Sunday, Oct. 31, from 3-9 p.m. on Church Street, Ocoee Street, Broad Street, First Street and Second Street.

This free family-friendly event will begin with a trick or treat stroll from 3-6 p.m. It will continue with a costume contest at 4 p.m. at the Post Office annex with the theme “Art is here,” then “Treat Street” on Church St. will take place at 5 p.m. with some of the candy being donated by Mars Wrigley.

“Great music is one of the many reasons the event is so popular,” said Sharon Marr, executive director of MainStreet Cleveland. “This year’s music lineup delivers.”

The bands “The Dexter Thomas Band” and “Bad Tattoo” will be performing from 5-6:30 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on the courthouse stage.

3. Woman cuts painters’ rope on 26th floor

A woman in Thailand cut the rope of two painters at her residency as they were working, leaving them hanging above the 26th floor until a couple rescued them.

The resident was angry the condo had not informed her of the work they would be doing that day, according to AP News.

The condo manager helped the two painters report the incident to the local police.

After appearing with her lawyer at the police station, the woman eventually confessed to the actions but denied any intent to kill.

The woman is facing attempted murder and property destruction charges. If charged with attempted murder, she could serve up to 20 years in prison.
