A new culture means high expectations for the Lady Flames Volleyball

Lee University hired alumna Christa Fabre to coach the Lady Flames Volleyball team back to prominence.

From 2017-2022, Coach Fabre coached at one of Lee’s in-conference rivals, Union University.  She was an assistant to Coach Darrin McClure during a time Union dominated conference play.  From 2019 to 2022, they won 37 conference games to only 11 losses.

After returning to Lee, she has had nothing short of a warm welcome back.

“Lee is such a family environment for me and has been so welcoming for me, coming back. The challenges are really more so for our family and having two little ones and my husband working full-time, too. So that's been the challenging part but Lee in general is just phenomenal in the way that they have helped us through all those transitions,” Coach Fabre said.

Along with a new coach, the team also has a number of new players.  Spring transfer Miya-Cole Brown has been fond of the culture since she joined.

“I think that our coaching staff genuinely cares about who we are outside of volleyball,” Brown said.

Senior middle blocker Macy Petty says the most important thing the team is trying to focus on is making sure everyone is on the same page.

“We have a lot of new players. And so just trying to … all get on the same page, making sure we're all working in the same direction and getting everybody up to speed because even for those of us who were here in the spring under her [Fabre] coaching, it's still a lot of new things. So making sure that we're all running in the same place, doing things like that, to make sure we're going in the same direction,” said Petty.

One of the ways Coach Fabre is making sure the team is aligned with each other is making sure the team is similar to a spearhead.

“It's basically like we're all moving in the same direction and in the book it also has the example of geese and how they fly in that same direction. If one falls behind then, you know, they go back and make sure that they're all aligned in the same spot,” Fabre said.

As of now, the Lady Flames have a 7-4 record with a home match this week in the Paul Dana Walker Arena on Tuesday, September 19. They will play University of Montevallo at 6 p.m. More info about the team’s schedule and players can be found on the Lee Athletics website or on the team’s Instagram.
