One Community at a time

One Community at a time

There are so many problems going on around the world that it can be difficult to be aware all of the conflicts and tragedies that are realities. Unfortunately, it seems that we only become moved by an extreme tragedy that affects many with death or poverty. We often overlook those around us who we can so easily help. Instead of looking across the globe and wishing we could do something, let’s look out our front doors to the community surrounding us and start there. It wasn’t until I did a little research that I realized how easy it is to truly impact lives of the unfortunate.

I began my quest with Goodwill, wondering what they can do other than supplying me with outdated clothes I must add to my wardrobe. When I asked them what students could do to help their community, the first thing said was to donate. So often we forget that there are people that truly need what we don’t ever use or just get rid of. There is even a program called Goodwill Helps through which they clean used medical equipment like wheelchairs, crutches, canes and walkers to give to those in need of it. It was interesting to learn about but not exactly what I was looking for.

Searching for a way to directly and positively affect the community, I went to Habitat for Humanity. I spoke with Matt Carlson, a Lee graduate who is now the executive director for this area. After he listed numerous ways to help, he told me about the recent endeavors of Habitat’s three-year-old program, which included building three houses for families over that span of time. This year they are starting seven houses to help our community. For students interested in helping, Carlson also mentioned donating. The Habitat for Humanity home store is like Goodwill, but the proceeds of its sales go straight toward the materials for building houses. He then directed me to contact our very own Leonard Center to join a building project that begins this February. It’s just a great way to make an impact on our world one community at a time.
