Footsteps of a Freshman


• WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 13

3:17 p.m. Phil Lofton arrives at the Lee University campus from Indianapolis, Ind., after a nine-hour drive with his parents, and catches up with friends he made during Summer Honors. “I slept most of the trip,” he said.
3:30 p.m. Phil, a biology major, enters registration for the Student Leadership Development Conference at the administration building.
5:23 p.m. After listening to university president Dr. Paul Conn speak for an hour, Phil has dinner with other students in the conference. “It was different than what I expected,” he said.
10 p.m. Following one more speaker and corporate worship, Phil’s parents take him to the hotel where they made reservations for the weekend. “There were a few things that I didn’t quite agree with him on, but overall the message was amazing,” he said.

• THURSDAY, AUGUST 14

9:05 a.m. Phil arrives on campus for his second day, eating breakfast with his reflection group (all women) in the Centenary Room and listening to devotions.
9:45 a.m. Turned loose on campus for a time of individual reflection, Phil walks to the patio of the Paul Conn Student Union and gulps apple juice while he fills out a page in his conference workbook.
10:14 a.m. On his return walk to the conference Phil pauses to make new friends. “This year I’m going to become part of something bigger than myself,” he said. “How can I be part of the solution?”
3:26 p.m. When the conference ends, Phil walks to O’Bannon Hall to take his first peek at his dorm room.
4:05 p.m. Phil helps one of his friends from Summer Honors (Jeremiah Hinkley) move into the dormitory early, lugging bags from the parking lot to the third floor.
8:09 p.m. After having dinner with his parents and shopping at Hamilton Place Mall, Phil returns to the hotel and takes some extra time to sleep because he feels a tad ill.

• FRIDAY, AUGUST 15

9:58 a.m. After having breakfast at McDonalds, Phil gets in line at the Walker Arena to get his student ID card made.
11:05 a.m. After spending an hour chatting with friends, playing solitaire on his iPod, and making jokes, Phil stands against the wall to have his photo made and his card printed. “It’s like a hotel card and a credit card all in one,” he said.
11:19 a.m. Phil enters the O’Bannon lobby to check in while his father takes care of the key deposit and activity fee.
11:27 a.m. Ben Hurst, Phil’s third floor resident assistant, accompanies him to his room that he’ll share with roommate Jordan Livingston. Ben goes through the required forms and check-in procedure.

11:45 a.m. Members of Lee’s basketball team, sporting Game Day t-shirts, help the Lofton family move boxes and clothes from the back of the Loftonmobile to his room, #300.

12:09 p.m. Dad and Mom help Phil rearrange dorm furniture and make his new bed for the first time.
3:00 p.m. Throwing his new Deke Day shirt over his shoulder, Phil weaves a path among the tents set up for the community showcase at Alumni Park.
4:58 p.m. Phil enters the Deacon Jones Dining Hall for his first meal as a freshman. He gets a slice of pizza and takes a window seat with a friend.
5:24 p.m. Three girls run to Phil, gathering hugs and demanding his cell phone number, each excited to reunite after Summer Honors.
7:08 p.m. Phil has two more dinners off campus before going to a dance party and returning to O’Bannon.
12:31 a.m. Phil prepares to spend the night in his dorm room for the first time. He plays a Star Wars game on his MacBook and changes into his night clothes before crossing his legs on his desk and watching an episode of “Mad Men”.

• SATURDAY, AUGUST 16

9:03 a.m. Phil attends the Student Life presentation at the Conn Center.
11 a.m. After attending a registration and money matters session in the Dixon Center, Phil and his group have lunch in a classroom.
2:30 p.m. Phil goes to Target with his parents to get last minute things for his dorm room, including a lamp, an ethernet cable and shelves.
6:32 p.m. The Loftons attend the Service of Dedication in the Conn Center.
8:12 p.m. Phil and his parents walk to the Walker Arena for the buffet following the service.

• SUNDAY, AUGUST 17

1:03 p.m. Freshmen meet in the Conn Center for Deke Day.
3:29 p.m. Phil goes to a Cleveland nursing home with his Gateway class.
5 p.m. After returning to campus, Phil grabs lunch in the Walker Arena and discusses his experience with his peer leader.
7:48 p.m. Phil attends U-Church in the Conn Center.
9:08 p.m. Pizza, chips and soda rock the PCSU lawn as Phil and his friends enjoy the post-chapel mixer in the dark before leaving to see a movie.

• MONDAY, AUGUST 18

12:05 p.m. Phil wakes up after sleeping in all morning.
1:21 p.m. Phil gets a new post office box (#514) in the student union.
1:43 p.m. In the depths of the library, Phil seeks out assistance getting his Lee University e-mail address set up from IS&T.
9:22 p.m. Hearing the call of an ice cream social, Phil and his friends go to the Student Leadership Council prospective members party at the PCSU. Phil signs up to learn more about the PR team and the Student Involvement group.

• TUESDAY, AUGUST 19

3:45 p.m. Having previously made an appointment for class registration, Phil heads to the Humanities Center to confirm enrollment, pick up his schedule, swing by data entry and meet the health clinic nurses.
8:31 p.m. Phil goes to the concert and block party outside the Humanities Center.

• WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 20

8:02 a.m. After getting lost looking for the non-existent Room 212 in the Humanities Center, Phil eventually finds his first class at Lee University, Gateway, and settles in.
