Top 5 Ways to Save on Gas
1. Know where you’re going. It’s impossible to calculate how much road time we spend just trying to find or decide on our destination, but if we could figure it up, I have a feeling it might be in the range of a lot.
2. Take it easy, Fonzie. There’s no need to rush, especially when gas is fluctuating between three and five dollars per gallon. A considerable amount of gas is wasted when we punch the acceleration or brake suddenly. Although it is a difficult habit to break, accelerating and braking more gently will help you conserve gas and is easier on your engine.
3. Choose your time battles wisely. If possible, plan your travel time around the less busy hours. Sometimes work and emergencies get in the way of this, but every little bit counts. If you have the option of getting your groceries at eight instead of five, it might just pay off.
4. Go for a cruise. Highway travel is commonly known to be much less demanding on your gas tank than city travel, but if you want to get the most out of your miles, use your cruise control. While not all cars have this feature, most more recent models do, and because cruise control is a feature focused on maintaining your selected speed, it eliminates the natural braking and accelerating we human drivers seem to be inclined toward. On top of this, it will help you resist the temptation of speeding.
5. Cut that air off. While there are instances when air conditioning is a must have, often times we turn it on without even realizing we’ve done so. Meanwhile, it is using up energy and horsepower from our car. Instead of relying on the car to do all the work, go natural and roll the windows down. However, if you’re on the highway, the resistance from the wind works against you more than for you, so just opt for keeping the A/C on low and the windows up.
