Lee’s own speaks as a part of the Writers Series

As a part of the English Department’s Writers Series hosted by Lee University, Lee’s own playwright Stacey Isom presented a play on Feb. 19.

The ten minute play, “A Proportional Response”, was inspired by the National Geographic photograph of Sharbat Gula, often referred to as the green eyed girl.

“The hardest part of writing a play of this nature is truly capturing real characters in a real story in such a short amount of time,” Isom said.

In this case, the script was made up of only nine pages.

The play has only one actor and Tuesday’s performance was done by Equity actress Kim Jackson.

“Modern playwrights most often lack the poetry of the classics. Stacey plays with rhythm and genuinely speaks poetry,” Jackson said.

Also taking a part in the festivities was New York director Jose Zayas of Intermediate Theatre Company. Isom has had past experience in working with Zayas and was quite happy for him to help in the production. He was quick to participate after reading the script, which he says mixes an honesty, humor, and directness not often seen.

“She creates a weird conceit mixed with high stakes and I enjoy the honesty of it all,” Zayas said.

Stacy Isom has a M.F.A. in both Screen Writing and Playwrighting. Her undergraduate education was done here at Lee in English. Dr. Matthew Melton was one of her first mentors and he helped steer her towards pursuing writing as a career.
