Faculty reigns victorious in annual Quiz Bowl

Four professors and four Kairos scholars fought sweaty palms and mispronunciations to achieve victory at the annual Quiz Bowl.

Audience members munched on sandwiches while the teacher and student competitors drifted into their seats.

The moderator, Jared Stine, explained the rules of competition only to be frequently interrupted by excited fans. Signs made of cardboard, seat cushions, and even a laundry basket decorated the stands.

Once the moderator finished his explanation, the crowd drew silent and the obvious nerves and butterflies showed on the faces of both the Kairos scholars and faculty.

On the Kairos side, Emily Carlisle overcame Dr. Melton in five straight Bible questions during head to head competition.

While several of the professors excelled in their specialty area questions, students fought for control and stayed closely behind the entire quiz.

“Not many people wanted to go up against them, only the few and the brave,” Carlisle said.

After four rounds of random questions the final round approached with the faculty ahead of the students 370 points to 285 points.

In a style suspiciously similar to Jeopardy, each side wagered their points before confronting the final question.

After much deliberation the faculty comprised of Dr. Swindle, Dr. White, Dr. Freake and Melton reigned victorious.

Categories ranged from pop culture to science and math to Greek gods and goddesses. In between rounds the 65 audience participants attempted trivia questions for free gifts.

Kairos members Tyler Franklin, Samantha Hathaway, Jon Williams and Carlisle battled the faculty for over an hour but the champion professors ended strong.

“It was awfully close all the way up to the end and it was not on account of me,” Melton said.
