Songwriter’s Showcase promises surprises

Phi Mu Alpha’s second annual Songwriter’s Showcase promises to feature some of Lee’s hidden talent.

This occasion provides budding young songwriters with the chance to share their musical abilities with the student body.

Event coordinator and Phi Mu Alpha member Chris Oglesby notes that Lee has great musicians waiting to be discovered.

“We discovered last semester just how much creative talent these artists have musically and lyrically,” Oglesby said.

The Songwriter’s Showcase was first held in Fall of 2007.

The club had a great response from both participants and audience members. The number of contributing songwriters is expected to increase this year.

“We had ten participants last year. We’re looking at about 15 this time,” Oglesby said.

The event typically highlights solo and duet performances.

Although the Songwriter’s Showcase is targeted toward piano and acoustic guitar players, any musician can get involved as long as amplification is not required.

Oglesby notes that this showcase will offer some new types of acts.

“This semester we have a Christian rapper and a performer utilizing a cellist and djembe player,” Oglesby said.

The Songwriter’s Showcase gives musical artists the opportunity to share their sound with fellow students and obtain valuable feedback on their performances.
Oglesby remarks that feedback from listeners is important for up-and-coming musicians.

“Audience response is a great tool for developing songwriters,” Oglesby said.

The event will take place at 7 p.m. on April 17 in the Ped Mall. Free doughnuts and beverages will be provided.

“This will be a very enjoyable evening…Students should come to support their friends, relax, hang out, and be inspired,” Oglesby said.

There are still spots available for the Songwriter’s Showcase.
