Brinsfield adds additional unit
Construction has been completed on the new addition to the female upperclassman apartment style housing, Brinsfield Row.
The President’s Cabinet and the Board of Directors announced the new housing project at the beginning of the spring semester and construction began immediately, in order to have the unit ready for the fall move-in date.
“[The Brinsfield project] was not a part of the original Press Toward the Mark campaign, but we decided that we wanted to add it,” Conn said. “It added 40 beds.”
The campaign publicly began during Celebration 2006, with a goal to raise $25 million for the construction of a new science building, School of Religion building and Health Clinic, as well as enlarge the campus space. The campaign has also funded a new technology infrastructure and added $2 million in endowed scholarships.
“We’ve done that twice before, we built the same units,” Conn said “What is now the middle section was build in 2003 and the one closest to the education building in 2004.”
The cost of building an entire new dormitory was not necessary at this time and would leave some empty space to fill, so the solution to add just one complete unit next to the older Brinsfield Row apartments was the perfect solution, according to Conn.
“We got to continue to move forward, [providing] more beds,” Conn said. “We had 1,800 beds last year and with them all full, you can’t continue to keep filling a certain amount of beds, you have to have a little cushion.”
In the increasing amounts of enrollment over the past few semesters, students have created more of a demand for on-campus housing. The mix of new incoming students and returning students continuing to live on campus has generated the need for additional housing.
