Golf cart thought stolen found
A Lee University golf cart was found Monday morning after its driver left it parked behind the Paul Conn Student Union for more than two hours Sunday night.
“It’s just too strange,” said Olumide Shogbaike, the Jazzman’s Cafe employee who last drove the cart before its disappearance. “I just hope [it's found].”
The cart was found parked in the circle behind Sharp-Davis Hall, Christina Fullerton, a Jazzman’s employee, said.
Shogbaike had used the golf cart to bring several buckets of ice to Jazzman’s, said Collin Bierle, a sophomore psychology major who helps out at Jazzman’s. Ice is regularly picked up from the Deacon Jones Dining Hall, atop the university’s cache of golf carts.
Fullerton said that Shogbaike parked the golf cart at the top of the stairs leading to the PCSU back patio around 8:30 p.m. Students were just beginning to leave the U-Church Starfield concert at the time.
Shogbaike, a sophomore business major who started working at Jazzman’s Cafe last December, said he was unable to check on the golf cart until Jazzman’s closed at 11 p.m.
“We were busy; we had a crowd,” he said. “I actually walked back to the cafeteria thinking someone, maybe Campus Safety, took it back there.”
Once the golf cart’s ignition is on, the cart is operated and powered by pressing the gas pedal, Shogbaike said. “It’s really an unusual kind of golf cart.”
The keys for the cart had been left at the garage, he said.
Lee University Campus Safety refused to comment on the matter, stating that information for the case was confidential at the time.
The Lee University Student Handbook states that theft “will result in severe disciplinary measures including the possibility of suspension or expulsion.”
