Chi softball tournaments turns hits into cures

The weekend of March 28-30, the men of Alpha Gamma Chi, a service club at Lee University, hosted their annual Iron Man Softball Tournament.

The tournament raises money for notable causes such as incurable diseases. This year’s cause was done in honor of those suffering from multiple sclerosis, an incurable disease that wears down the immune system and body of its victims over an extended period of time for the person’s life.

It is a merciless disease, so the club decided to show mercy to those less fortunate by raising as much money as possible over the weekend for the cause.

The money was raised several ways. Teams paid one hundred dollars a piece to join the tournament and even other individuals not participating in the tournament donated money if they felt they wanted to.

The tournament also had many sponsors, a few of which were: East-West Media, Steve Black and Keller Williams Realty, Farmhouse, Oliver’s and the Donation Management Group.

The president of Alpha Gamma Chi, Carmen Lastoria, said that, “Hosting this benefit softball tournament was our way to give back. It was our way to give back to such an incredible need that seems to be overlooked most of the time.”

The tournament ran from Friday night, March 28 until Sunday evening, March 30. The tournament was due to end within twenty-four hours of its start on Friday, but due to rough weather the tournament took short breaks and went through Sunday.

The tournament raised $1200 for MS as well as raised awareness for this incurable disease. The committee members in Chi who were placed in charge of working to put the tournament together were Brandon Frazier, Josh “Bucky” Gregory, Taylor Jones, Chris Hadsell and Chris Jones.

Through the event the club believes they were doing something worth doing. “Being a service club at Lee it’s good to do a great work for a great cause,” said Lastoria.

The more we do for each other, the better we will be to one another, the better place we will have to live.
