A team of their own
The men’s rugby team at Lee has stepped up and accomplished a remarkable amount of goals since they have been a team. Rugby is generally thought of as being a men’s sport.
This year that is all about to change. For the first time at Lee, the ragtag brutal Lee ladies are starting a rugby team. They are not alone as there are numerous female teams at other colleges around the world.
Two years ago a couple of girls tried to put a rugby team together, but the effort soon died. Last year a group of ladies started attending the men’s rugby practices and decided to start a team of their own.
So they delicately went through the process it takes to start a club team. Going through the Dean of Students, the Student Leadership Council, a couple of hurdles and the Director of Campus Recreation, they finally got the sport approved.
This year they finally started regularly scheduled practices, beginning with an informational meeting of 52 female attendees. Their first practice consisted of 37 girls actually showing up to play. While these numbers may dwindle in the near future, it is an amazing start for a brand new sport.
The girls are always looking for new talent as well. All of their practices are open to any girl who wants to play. Similar to the men’s team, no experience is required to start playing with the team.
Expectations are high this year for the women’s team as this will be the first year they get a chance to show what they are made of. They would love any support they could get from Lee students at home games.
