Pick and Roll

Lady Flames run a high pick and roll against the UTC Mocs on Tuesday Night at Mackenzie Arena.

The Lady Flames traveled down to Chattanooga to face off with the Mocs this past Tuesday, Nov. 6.

Despite a narrow, six-point loss, the game showed a lot about Coach Marty Rowe’s basketball team and provided a positive outlook on the upcoming season. The Mocs were able to jump out to an early lead and keep just enough of a distance throughout the entire contest.

It was a tough go in the paint, as the Mocs looked down low to find the bulk of their offense.

While the Mocs went to the paint, the Lady Flames turned to the three ball for their offensive gameplay. The Lady Flames relied on a variety of outside shooters to keep them within striking range.

Preseason All-GSC guard Abby Bertram said just a little more talking on the court among the team could have been the difference between a win and a loss.

“I would love to see our communication on the court be the best you've ever seen from a basketball team,” Bertram said. “If we communicate like we know we can, we would be unbeatable.”

As the talking picked up, so did the Lady Flames' game play.

Everything was going the visiting team’s way during the 4th quarter, and the Mocs were on their heels. Defense was stepping up to bring heat the Mocs couldn’t take.

The Lady Flames ended the game outscoring the Mocs in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to overcome their East Tennessee foe.

As the regular season approaches, putting together a full 40 minutes will be a tall but manageable task Coach Rowe’s team will have to accomplish game after game. In such a tough conference as the GSC, the girls can’t afford to take their foot off the gas.

“I think we need to play the same aggressiveness and sense of urgency as we did those last few minutes of the game, the whole game,” Bertram said. “If we did that, we wouldn't be playing catch-up at the end of a game.”
