1. Katie Sowers makes headlines as the first female coach at the Super Bowl

Katie Sowers makes history as she is named the first female to coach at the Super Bowl. Sowers, who works for the San Francisco 49ers as an assistant coach, is hoping to begin a path where “even though I’m the first [female coach,] the important thing is I’m not the last,” Sowers said to AP News.

Lee students have the opportunity to attend a Super Bowl party on Sunday at 6 p.m. in the Deacon Jones Dining Hall. Hosted by Student Leadership Council and Kappa Upsilon Chi, there will be free food, games and the Superbowl on the big screen.

2. Witness vote to take place in Trump impeachment trial today

Senators will vote on witnesses today, which will either end the trial or extend it for a few more weeks. Senators had the opportunity Thursday to ask any questions they wanted over an eight hour period, according to AP News.

The long awaited vote comes after weeks of trial and investigation into Trump’s charges of abuse of power due to his involvement in Ukraine and U.S. military relations, which could lead to his removal from office.

3. Tennessee legislator files bill to label Washington Post and CNN as ‘fake news’

Tennessee Republican State Rep. Micah Van Huss announced on Wednesday he filed a bill titled “HJR 779” which would classify The Washington Post and CNN as “fake news and condemn them for denigrating our citizens.”

Huss claims these news organizations are calling Trump supporters “cults” and the media “oversimplifies the way people think and feel about their own beliefs.” This resolution seeks to label the news organizations “fake news and part of the media wing of the Democratic Party,” said Huss.
