Flames soccer in 2015

The Flames' men's soccer team began their 2015 season with a 1-0 victory against Emmanuel College at home on Friday, Sept. 9.

Flames Head Coach Paul Furey said the key to the 2015 season is strong conference play.

“This year our focus is the Gulf South Conference and wanting to do well there,” Furey said.

Having only graduated two seniors from the 2014 team, the Flames enter 2015 with an experienced group.

Flames Midfielder David Perez was awarded the team's Most Valuable Player in 2014, and believes the 2015 squad is a team with character.

“You can expect a team who plays with a lot of character and who play really hard,” Perez said. “We don't play dirty, but we have a lot of passion. We love to play for each other and our fans, because without them it's not as fun.”

The Flames soccer team has been rallying behind the #THISYEARCOUNTS as they prepare for the 2015 season. The hashtag stresses the idea that the 2015 season carries added weight because Lee University, for the first time, is a member of the NCAA Division II.

Team Captain Gabe Franco is entering his senior year, and said that his previous seasons were preparation for the opportunity to compete as a Division II school.

“This year is what we've been working for,” Franco said. “This is what we've been working for the past three years now. This is where we want to be. We want to show the Division II what we have.”
