Big Inning Leads Wolves Past Lady Flames

CARROLLTON, Ga. A seven run fourth inning led the University of West Georgia Wolves past the Lee University softball team 10-2 in the third and final game of the series. The Lady Flames took the first two games of the series to win it. With the loss, Lee falls to 9-5 overall and 5-4 in Gulf South Conference action.
 
The Wolves scored twice in the bottom of the first using a sacrifice fly and a fielder’s choice to score the runs. Lee answered with an unearned run in the second when Marquila Howell drove Annalynn Ormsby home.
 
The third inning had the Lady Flames tie the game when Laney Harris was walked with the bases loaded. She drove Shelby Cole in with another unearned run. The fourth inning had UWG capitalize with seven runs to retake the lead. The first run came in on an error. The second for UWG was scored with a bases loaded walk. The breakout hits came via a grand slam and then a solo home run from back-to-back hitters. The final run for UWG came in the fifth on a sacrifice fly.
 
Ormsby had two of the five hits for Lee in the loss. With Howell and Harris earning the RBI. Abigail Welbaum was credited with the loss going three and two-thirds innings giving up seven runs on four hits.
 
The Lady Flames will return home on Tuesday, March 5 with a non-conference double header against the University of Montevallo at 1 and 3 PM.

“We let some moments get too big for us today. The score doesn’t show how close of a game it was. We are continuing to get better at doing hard things well. Today we didn’t get a result, but we learned. We are always moving toward growth.”
