Fall flicks: this season’s most anticipated releases and re-releases

Autumn is upon us, and with it comes a series of new and not-so-new releases in theaters. As it has been in the past few years, many of the most anticipated new movies belong to popular franchises. Keeping with the theme of familiarity, several films are being re-released to celebrate anniversaries. From a sci-fi film about AI entering the real world, to a movie musical about two of pop culture’s most famous witches, this season has something for everybody. Thus, here is a list of fall’s most anticipated releases and re-releases:

Tron: Ares

AI is becoming a bigger part of everyday life, and the release of “Tron: Ares” is a testament to that fact. The third installment of Disney’s “Tron” series released on Oct. 10.

While the first two films center around humans entering the virtual world, the opposite occurs in “Ares.” Artificial intelligence program Ares, played by Jared Leto, is sent to the real world to obtain a code that would allow digital beings to stay there forever.

The film is said to be a standalone sequel, meaning it exists within the same universe as the previous installments, but can be enjoyed and understood without watching previous films.

Twilight Saga

It has been two decades since readers first fell “unconditionally and irrevocably in love” with Twilight. Luckily for fans, Bella, Edward, and Jacob will soon be back on the big screen. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first “Twilight” book, Lionsgate and Fathom Entertainment are re-releasing the film series in theaters.

All five films will play over a five-day period, starting with the original movie on Oct. 29, and ending with “Breaking Dawn - Part 2” on Nov. 2.

Whether you are Team Edward, Team Jacob, or too young to know what that means, the re-release of the Twilight saga is set to be an exciting cinematic event.

Back to the Future

Great Scott! Another famous film series is celebrating an important milestone. It has been 40 years since Marty McFly went “Back to the Future,” and the film is coming back to theaters for its 40th anniversary.

“Back to the Future” will play in theaters at the end of October. Instead of trick or treating, you can celebrate Halloween by watching one of the most iconic films of the 1980s.

Wicked: For Good

A year after the release of its wildly successful predecessor, “Wicked: For Good” will arrive in theaters on Nov. 21. Audiences are excited to learn what happens to Glinda and Elphaba, as they become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good, respectively.

“For Good” will expand upon the second act of the Broadway hit it is based on, with two new songs and a deeper focus on the relationships between the two leads.

Much like the first film, “Wicked: For Good” is expected to be a box office success.

In an age when entertainment is often consumed in the form of short TikTok and Instagram Reel videos, taking a trip to the movie theater is a change of pace.

“We come to this place for magic,” said Nicole Kidman, in her famous AMC Theatres Commercial. You can experience the “magic” yourself, by catching a new or old favorite in theaters.
