Registration open to high school students for Lee’s 2025 Honor Band

Registration is now open to high school students for Lee University’s Honor Band, which will be held on Thursday, Nov. 13 through Saturday, Nov. 15.   

The Lee University Honor Band is an event for outstanding high school musicians held annually in the fall. Students are selected from numerous high schools throughout the United States, based on individual submissions as well as recommendations by band directors.   

"Honor Band has always been a wonderful experience for high school students in our community, as well as those who join us from other states,” said Dr. Amy Humberd, assistant professor of clarinet and event coordinator. “Last year, we were thrilled to host the largest Lee Honor Band event ever, and we are excited to continue that tradition this year."

Honor Band participants will have the opportunity to work with faculty and students from the Lee University School of Music and will receive quality training over the course of the clinic. Two clinicians will also be brought in for the weekend, Dr. Josh Pace of Lee and Donald Benton of Cleveland High School.  

Pace joined the School of Music faculty in the fall of 2024 and serves as the director of bands and assistant professor of music education. Before coming to Lee, he served as the band and orchestra director at Omaha Northwest High School and a doctoral conducting associate at the University of Florida.   

Benton formerly served as president of the East Tennessee State Band & Orchestra Association, as well as Walker Valley High School band director, and currently is assistant principal at Cleveland High School assistant principal. He was the recipient of the 2019 Department Alumnus of the Year Award for the Lee School of Music and is welcomed back for his first year with Honor Band.  

The event will culminate in a performance by the Honor Band, which will be free and open to the public, on November 15.   

Registration to participate in the Honor Band clinic will close on Monday, Oct. 13.
