Caffeine and Christ
For years, energy drinks have been marketed as a source of motivation, productivity, and an extra boost to get through a busy day. Now, a new type of energy drink is bringing a different message to the market: faith.
Brands such as Agape Energy and Drink Yahweh are combining the familiar energy drink experience with Scripture-inspired messaging and faith-based branding. From their names and packaging to their mission and target audiences, these beverages differ from any energy drink sold before.
So, what are Christian energy drinks? They are caffeinated beverages that combine the traditional function of an energy drink with faith-based names, packaging, and marketing. The companies behind these products aim to provide consumers with both an energy boost and a connection to Christian faith.
How do Christian energy drinks differ from a normal energy drink like Red Bull, Monster, or Celsius? The main difference is not about the ingredients, but the message, branding, and purpose behind it.
Traditional energy drinks like Red Bull focus their message on adrenaline fueled lifestyles, extreme energy, and daring experiences. In contrast, Agape Energy’s message is focused on community driven co-creation and spreading the gospel.
Marketing Professor Dr. Adina Scruggs believes it is up to the consumer to decide if the Christian component of the product is of value to them.
“From a marketing standpoint, I would compare them using the same things we would use to evaluate any competing brands: product, price, distribution, promotion, target market, positioning, and brand value,” Scruggs said. “The faith component provides another point of differentiation, but ultimately consumers still have to perceive enough value in the actual product to purchase it again.”
In regards to pricing, a 12-pack of 12 oz. Agape Energy cans are $29.99. A 12-pack of 12 oz. Drink Yahweh is $39.95. A 12-pack of 16 oz. regular Monster Energy Drinks range from around $21 - 24. A 12-pack of 12 oz. Celsius cans cost around $22. The prices of Christian energy drinks are higher, with Drink Yahweh being the highest.
Faith-based products have been around for a long time, but Christian energy drinks are entirely new. Though they have gained traction, it is yet to be seen whether or not they will reach the same level of popularity as other energy drinks. One day, there could be Agape Energy cans in vending machines, or a pack of Drink Yahweh at every local gas station.
