Service project fills hearts and bowls

Service project fills hearts and bowls

The Lee University Art Program is hosting the “Empty Bowls” fundraiser in the Mayfield Gallery on April 17 from 5:00–6:30pm. All proceeds from the event will go directly to the Second Harvest Food Bank.

“Empty Bowls is centered around the simple act of sharing a meal to raise awareness about food insecurity,” said Victoria Phillips, visiting assistant professor of art. “Guests leave with a handcrafted bowl as a reminder that many in our community still face empty bowls every day.”

Tickets for the bowls are $25. Each ticket will include a handmade ceramic bowl of one’s choosing, along with a meal of soup and salad. There will also be a selection of tea, coffee, and water available.

Empty Bowls is part of a national grassroots effort that brings together artists, schools, and community members to fight hunger through creativity and compassion.

According to Phillips, Lee’s ceramics students and faculty have been hard at work since last fall creating the bowls for the event, each one handcrafted from start to finish.

“It’s a meaningful opportunity for our students to use their creative work in a way that gives back—connecting art, service, and community in a tangible way,” said Phillips.

Limited tickets are available and can be purchased on Eventbrite or at the door with cash, check, or Venmo while supplies (food and bowls) last. The Mayfield Gallery is located at 1801 Magnolia Avenue NE.
