What’s happening in Cleveland: Things to do during Lee Day weekend

Lee Day weekend allows community members, as well as prospective students and families, to come together and celebrate life at Lee University. But what about those who want to explore the area? Here is a list of things offered off campus during Lee Day weekend:

  1. Hot Slaw and Art Y’all Festival

Lee Day visitors can stroll right off campus and join in the fun at the Hot Slaw and Art Y’all Festival in downtown Cleveland. Non-locals may find this to be an odd festival, but there is a special reason for it.

A southern speciality, hot slaw originated in Cleveland. The town is the hot slaw capital of Tennessee, and hot slaw is the first official state food of Tennessee.

Made of mayonnaise, yellow mustard, and shredded cabbage, hot slaw is a side dish often served on hot dogs.

The Hot Slaw and Art Y’all Festival celebrates this important part of local culture, as well as art.

Those who visit the festival can enjoy live entertainment, browse vendor booths, grab a bite to eat, or take a photo with the festival mascot — Sammy the Hot Slaw Dog.

There will also be three different hot slaw contests: a hot slaw Dog Eating Contest, an amateur hot slaw-off, and a pro hot slaw-off.

The festival will take place in Downtown Cleveland on Saturday, April 11, from noon to 7 p.m.

  2. Go shopping

From retail chains, to local antique stores, Cleveland has a variety of places to shop.

Anyone who wants to go clothes shopping can check out TJ Maxx, Belk, Old Navy, Kohls, and many others.

If you are a fan of shopping secondhand, Cleveland has many places to stop and shop.

Bookworms need not travel far to purchase their favorite reads. There are two used bookstores within walking distance of campus, including The Bookery Cleveland and Inklings Bookstore.

There are also local thrift and consignment stores within minutes of the campus including Prior Attire, Good Foundations Thrift Store, En Vogue Consignment, Uptown Cheapskate, and Goodwill Store.

For any antique shoppers out there, Cleveland has several stores. Grit & Grace, the Antique Parlor, and United Estates Antique Mall, are just a few of the places to find vintage treasures.

  3. Eat or get a sweet treat

Lee is a hop, skip, and a jump away from numerous restaurants, coffee shops, and dessert places.

Some of Lee students’ favorite spots to eat are Tres Hermanos, Dos Bros Fresh Mexican Grill, and Cook Out.

Anyone craving a sweet treat should try Whit’s Frozen Custard, Mexi Botanas, Sprinklez Ice Cream, or Billie’s Sweet Treats. Whit’s has a Lee University dessert on their menu — the LeeU Lava Chip.

Though Lee Day weekend offers many ways for visitors to immerse themselves in the Lee community, visitors may want to explore the area, and Cleveland has many places to do that.
