Why "Love Your Mama?"

This spring, Lee University will hold its annual “Love Your Mama” Chapel on April 21. This chapel signifies the end of another year while celebrating freshmen and the completion of their first year.

“It’s a reunion that feels very touching and special. There are proud moments; you see these instructors and peer leaders so proud of their students, and they, too, can see the development in their students. We all feel proud of their accomplishments,” said Dr. Roberts, vice president of student success.

The service theme is “Rite of Passage,” which will feature an all-freshmen band and several freshmen speakers. The focus will be on the accomplishments of the newest class and encouraging them to take their place as leaders and mentors. The recipients of the Hicks Scholarship, a prestigious award given exclusively to freshmen, are also honored.

“I hope that students take the time to reflect on how they first felt when they arrived at Lee University,” said Roberts.

Following chapel, all of Lee is invited to a celebration on the Ped Mall. Freshmen will reunite with their gateway groups and receive a packet, including a free “Love Your Mama” T-shirt. The celebration will include games, free food, music, and door prizes. Transfer gateways and spring gateways are invited and encouraged to participate in the events as well.

“This is your home. We always want you to see it as a loving home. In time to come, I hope you come back to your alma mater," said Roberts.

“Love Your Mama” comes from the Latin phrase “alma mater,” which means “mother.” This event signifies the accomplishments of one era while looking forward to what is to come.
