ESPN3 will be at Walker Arena on Thursday, Jan. 26 airing both “white-out” themed games against Union University.

Lee’s athletes received this broadcasting privilege as a perk of being awarded the 2016 NCAA Division II Award of Excellence. Women’s head basketball coach Marty Rowe explained that this great honor not only represents the diligence of the basketball teams, but the entirety of the athletic program and the university.

“I think we all take great pride in the fact that we’re getting a chance to share the school itself and the athletic program with the rest of the country,” Rowe said.

Sophomore men’s basketball player Isaac Merian remembered being a high schooler watching other athletes broadcasted on ESPN, and realized what a humbling opportunity it is now that it is his turn. Merian acknowledged the hard work of his team and said he feels extremely grateful for this opportunity.

As part of the “white-out” festivities, Lee will be giving out 1,000 free T-shirts and rally towels. Merian emphasizes how this type of theme-night encourages great energy and support from the crowd, which has a strong motivating effect on players.

Head men’s basketball coach Bubba Smith highlighted the importance of high-energy supporters in a team’s success.

“An energetic and engaged fan base makes a huge difference,” Coach Smith said, “it’s a family affair, and our fans and students are an extension of our family.”

Coach Smith said his team will not approach this game any differently than their others, but instead remain consistent with what they are accustomed to.

This opportunity is seen by Lee’s athletic program as a great way to promote the university’s high-quality teams as well as other educational offerings.

Lee students and Cleveland residents are invited to attend both athletic events on Thursday evening at no charge. The women’s team will begin at 6:00 p.m. followed by the men’s team at 8:00 p.m.
