The Lee University volleyball team held their annual event “Volley for a Cure” this past Friday night. The event, which supports breast cancer awareness, also served as senior night to honor the players that will be graduating this year.

“Volley for a Cure” supports those around Cleveland who have been affected by breast cancer or have a family member who has battled against it. The team raised money by selling t-shirts for the Mary Ellen Locher Foundation. The money goes toward a scholarship for Cleveland residents whose families have been affected by breast cancer.

Being able to help raise money and put it towards helping families in need has been a beneficial experience for the players. Sophomore Savannah Chan believes it has shown them how meaningful it is to be able to help local families.

“I love the fundraising,” said Chan. “That money is going to help kids go to college, and I love that part. I don’t have a family member with breast cancer, but I can understand how hard that can be.”

This year’s scholarship recipient was Logan Griffith, a Cleveland resident and student at Middle Tennessee State University. Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in the summer of 2019, and Griffith shared her gratitude, explaining what a help this scholarship will be to her education.

“This will be so beneficial,” said Griffith. “This is just a huge surprise, and I’m so lucky to receive it. I’m so honored.”

The “Volley for a Cure” event also served as senior night for the five graduating players on the Lady Flames — Micaela McMichen, Hannah Matthews, Bailey Kress, Quinne Daoust and Mary Katherine Givhan.

The game was hard-fought for both teams, but the Lady Flames fell 3-2 in the end. However, the night will be remembered as a success for those involved in “Volley for a Cure.”

"When I go home tonight, that's what I'll remember,” said head coach Andrea Hudson. “Knowing that we have helped their family with her going to college. I'm excited about that. It was a great night for Volley for a Cure."
