The college basketball season is here, and the Lady Flames are prepared for another successful season. After a conference championship last season, they hope to continue their success.

Having been picked number one in the GSC preseason polls, the Lady Flames are out on a mission to prove they can do whatever it takes to live up to the expectations.

“I think we’re all really excited,” said senior forward Nicky Widenski. “It's like we’ve been practicing so hard and we’re so competitive in practice and we’re all just ready to get out there and play games.”

Having won the conference championship last season, the Lady Flames will have a target on their back when it comes to GSC play. The players believe they have what it takes to win despite the competition.

“I think we have what it takes,” said senior guard Abby Bertram. “I think it’s just all about focusing on the little things and really focusing on practice and working hard rather than working towards a goal that we know we can achieve. We just need to focus on the little things first.”

Constantly improving their skills throughout the season will play a key factor in this upcoming year, according to Head Coach Marty Rowe.

“Our expectation is to be the very best team that we can possibly be in February and March,” said Rowe. “Our expectations are just to get better every single day, and have a chance to win every single game by taking it one game, one day at a time.”

The Lady Flames are ready for another shot at being crowned GSC champions and more. They were left disappointed from region play last year and are striving to be the best team they can be for this clean slate season.

“We got taken out sooner than what we wanted to last year and it definitely was not the way we wanted to be put out. That's definitely going to be a motivating factor for all of us,” said redshirt junior guard Maddie Long.

While the Lady Flames remain confident, they also have the mindset to not take the team for granted.

“Last year, we went into the season with a mentality that we had something to prove and something to fight for,” said Asher Greiner, graduate assistant. “This year, we’re still trying to play with that mentality and we still have people to prove wrong. With that mentality, we can really compete at a higher level.”

The Lady Flames opened their season with a hard-fought loss to UT-Chattanooga in an exhibition game last Tuesday and then defeated Grace College 102-59 at home on the Saturday of Homecoming. The Lady Flames will compete in the GSC/SSC Challenge on Nov. 8 before heading into conference play.
