The (Cornerstone) Chapel Prayer Vigil, three years later.

Three years ago, a movement broke out on Lee’s campus. Students, faculty, and staff gathered in the Cornerstone Chapel for a spontaneous time of prayer. For four straight days, Lee University sought the Lord and reveled in His presence.

It began with a group of students in Dr. Kevin Nordby’s class who, as retired faculty member Dr. Ricky Moore described it, had been “drinking from a well two hours away.” They had recently returned from the revival that had broken out the week before at Asbury University. When they came back to campus that Monday morning, they shared a deep burden to pray for revival at Lee.

In response, Nordby and a handful of students chose to spend time praying together in the chapel. From that simple decision, something much larger unfolded. In the days that followed, students and community members filled the seats and lined the aisles of the Cornerstone Chapel at all hours of the day and night, longing to encounter the same movement of God they had witnessed just two hours up the road.

Day and night, Lee Students prayed for different topics by the hour. For the state of the nation, for our University, and much more.

Students filtered in and out over the course of four days. Sometimes, the chapel was quiet – with soft piano playing inviting a time of personal reflection and prayer. Other times, it was loud – with boisterous worship reflecting the joy that the Lord’s presence brought those in attendance.

Members of the Cleveland community also attended the Prayer Vigil. Dr. Mark Walker, the President of Lee at the time, opened the chapel up to the community at designated hours.

After three years, Lee remembers the impact that those four days made. Hundreds of students, faculty, staff, and community members attended, seeking the Lord’s presence.
